2.3: First tests and feedback

The beta 2.3 is available since February 28th, for those who own the Beta access. The latter is now available in the Store for €5.99/$6.49/£4.99.

I invite you to read the Patch Notes 2.3 Beta 1 or to open the summary Everything about Commanders.

Spacebear – Tourism installation

I was able to test the beta just a few hours: I visited the new Mega-Ships (huge new NPC ships), the asteroids bases, tried the Dolphin (Light Liner), created my commander, played with the new internal and external cameras, accomplished mission chains (direct continuation of the previous mission) and even discovered some pieces of history to come with the Thargoids. The Multicrew is not yet available because Frontier is solving connection problems; This should happen next week.

I must admit that the new ship renderings and multiple graphic improvements are outstanding! These new toys allow us to take quite impressive screenshots, with a focus or blur tune, more or less far from our ship, camera-focused on our ship or on the background: the tool really is exciting. The 13 pages of Patch Notes add a ton of QoL improvements to help us better appreciate the game. However, despite these many additions, I feel that the content is quite empty, one wonders what is the true purpose of this update. The 2.2 and its passengers/fighter had left me a bitter emptiness, and I’m afraid that this 2.3 will do the same. It should be noted that the story will continue to develop and the Thargoids should be much more burdensome on humanity. So I put it all back on the story, hopefully it actually comes forward this time, with an interesting content addition for the Lore and Players progressions.

  • [Science] The recent announcement of the discovery of the Trappist 1 system is exciting. The star, an M8 dwarf red star is right at the bottom end of the M class stars, so faint it is only just visible in the most powerful telescopes, and doesn’t feature in most star catalogues for this reason. Luckily, though, the system is almost exactly ‘edge on’ from our viewpoint – which means it is possible to ‘see’ the planets as they occlude the tiny star, and an incredible seven terrestrial planets have been spotted around the star by this technique, three of them in the ‘habitable zone’. Even with Hubble, the fainter M class red stars are only just visible at 40 light years, which is why Trappist 1 is not in most of the star catalogues. Beyond this distance we can see ever fewer M class stars – particularly the fainter ones like this M8 – and it is where our procedural generation begins to kick in – supplementing the brighter, more visible stars. The way Stellar Forge works is to use ‘available mass’ from which to generate systems – and because of this unaccounted mass, Stellar Forge has created a system with a Brown Dwarf in very nearly the same place – 39 light years away – this is only a little smaller than an M8 – and it even has seven terrestrial worlds around it – Core Sys Sector XU-P A5-0. Interestingly the system that came out of Stellar Forge has a couple of moons, and a couple of co-orbiting binary pairs – these things would not (yet) be detected in the occlusion technique, as this is simply detecting the darkening of the stellar disc, but who knows, this might be possible. Because of this we have tweaked Stellar Forge with the data from the recent discoveries so that the planets are now the same – and we have renamed it Trappist 1 – but the great thing is it is only a small tweak! We may still add a few moons back in, and this should go live in beta 2, and will of course be in 2.3 when it goes live to everyone. – SourceDavid Braben, Directeur Frontier Developments

  • [Gameplay] For Beta 2.3, we’ve added diminishing returns to shield booster stacking that start at about +80% and cap out at +150% from the health of the shield generator (after any modifications on the shield generator have already been applied). The hardness and hardness piercing of huge ships/weapons has gone up by +160% (it was +200% in the experiment we ran during the last interim build beta), hardness piercing of large weapons has gone up by +80% (was +100% in the experiment). Plasma Accelerators and Railguns both count as a larger size class than they actually are for this scaling // Big-3 Ships heavily stacking shield boosters will have weaker shields (but combined with 2.2.03 changes those shields regenerate much faster) but they have much tougher hulls, especially against smaller/medium sized weapons. It also inherently pulls the Fer de Lance down a notch, as it can carry a disproportionately large number of shield boosters, and the hardness change will make large weapons a little more effective against its tougher-than-normal hull. – SourceSandro Sammarco, Lead Designer

◘ 25 Feb – Earlier this week, automated stellar probes in the HIP 16497 system picked up an unusual heat signature. Local explorers promptly launched an investigation, only to discover that an asteroid had inexplicably disappeared from the system :

« It’s most peculiar, » said Kate Panamen of the Mars High Astrocartography Institute. « Given the asteroid’s orbit, it shouldn’t have come into contact with anything in the system for aeons. Nevertheless, the investigators found an expanding cloud of dust in the asteroid’s supposed location. We’re at a loss to explain how it could have been destroyed. »

Both Federal and Imperial sources denied rumours that the destruction of the asteroid was a result of experimental weapon testing.

◘ 2 March – Loren’s Legion, an Imperial organisation based in the Prism system, has placed an open order for Tantalum. The organisation has a wide range of business interest, and regularly supplies commercial entities with raw materials and other commodities. On this occasion it has turned to the galactic community for help fulfilling its commitments.

◘ 3 March – Soon, update tomorrow
