Thargoids, Guardians and Superpowers
For millenias, we wondered whether we were alone in the universe. When the Thargoids arrived more than a century ago, we learned that we were roughly unprepared to encounter a sentient alien species intending to destroy us. Ripping our ships from witch space, brutally laying waste to any that would cross their territory, what little we know of the Thargoids was gathered by the few who were lucky enough to survive, or from the wreckage of the many who did not. But as time went on, and the Thagoids appeared to retreat from our space, what we were left with was just that – wreckage. A legacy of conflicts with the unknown, derelecits from species we knew too little of, a void to be filled.
And fill it we did, as humanity spread their wings among the stars in search of knowledge. We touched the edges of known space and beyond, blazing a trail for the rest of humanity to follow, wondering what course we would chart next. We found massive Guardians ruins and relics, wondering about their construction and purpose. But there was one thing we wondered above all else… who were these invaders? We had discovered much about the dangers of space travel, yet so little about those who had done so before us. At best, we could learn from them. At worst, we might find a way to defeat them.
The signs were all there, the messages hidden but not beyond our understanding. From everything that we have learned, we know now that we are not alone in the universe, and while we may not have been prepared for their arrival, rest assured we will prepare for their return.
The update 2.4 « The Return » is still planned for the third quarter of 2017 ie in one or two months! Prepare yourself for the ultimate chapter of Season 2 – It will be a massive piece of lore and something very important for the future of Elite: Dangerous.

- [Feature] The Karma system is a feature currently being developed to support the community with certain trolls/aggressive behaviours that are unnecessary to the game’s health. Bonuses and penalties should apply to players who destroy vessels for no apparent reason, if their stats are way superior to the attacked ship, if they initiate the first shot without the target being wanted – multiple parameters will be taken into account to chase the criminals and support the pilots who abid by the laws. Piracy is something that has often been brought on the table this week, as it is a criminal activity. Frontier confirms that the piracy in Elite: Dangerous is something that theyr truly appreciate when it is well done. A pirate must try to disable or slow down his target in order to steal the booty from his prey, not to kill his target after retrieving the resources. The Karma should not track the Powerplay actions, it is normal to destroy an enemy if the latter is in a controlled/exploited/expansions system. Ramming the target to commit suicide and causing the station to destroy the poor pilot, launching mines in a station or firing missiles, combat logging will also be accounted into the Karma system. There will also be neutral zones where the feature will not be applied like Anarchies or even around barnacles. A module to slow down the targets is under study. After 2.4, some criminal careers will be enhanced. The system will be a real challenge and will be improved over time but Frontier really wants to establish a feature with of risks/rewards in order to progress on the interaction between players and the desire to join the Open World. – Source – Sandro Sammarco, Lead Designer

Powerplay and Lore
Powerplay is an ongoing battle for interstellar conquest and control. Players can choose a Power, help guide their strategy, and take on special objectives to advance their shared cause. Player choices and actions have a direct and visible impact on the balance of galactic power.
◘ 5 July – Professor Ishmael Palin, leading authority on xeno-biological research, has commented on the discovery of functional technology at the Thargoid structures.
“This revelation is significant not only because it gives us an insight into Thargoid technology, but because it confirms the long-posited connection between the Thargoids and the Unknown Artefacts and Probes. Unfortunately, we still do not know the exact purpose of these pieces of technology. Reconnaissance, surveillance, cartography? The specifics elude us, even while fresh discoveries are made.”
Meanwhile, Ram Tah, the engineer leading research into the lost civilisation known as the Guardians, has commented on reports of interaction between Guardian and Thargoid technology:
“The fact that Guardian artefacts react to the Thargoid device certainly seems to suggest some kind of prior contact, and although we know very little about Thargoid history, interaction between the two races is entirely possible. But the negative nature of the reaction could be a sign that the relationship was not entirely peaceful.”
◘ 6 July – The Federation has announced plans to construct a new survey outpost in the HIP 17692 system. Federal sources have confirmed that the outpost is designed to give the Federation a vantage point, close to the Pleiades, from which to monitor Thargoid activity. A Federal spokesperson gave the following statement:
“To date, Thargoid vessels have been encountered in the Maia system and around the Pleiades Nebula, so we feel it is important to have a reconnaissance outpost as close to this region as possible.”
◘ 6 July – Last month, the Empire and the Federation launched initiatives to bolster their presences in the Pleiades star cluster. Following the successful conclusion of both campaigns, the superpowers set to work on their respective construction projects. These projects have now come to an end.
In the HR 1185 system, Imperial Senator Zemina Torval presided over the maiden voyage of the Indra, a massive Wells-class Carrier. She concluded the launch with a brief statement, saying, “Space is by nature hostile. The Indra will make this particular system less so.”
Meanwhile, the Federation announced the completion of Blackmount Orbital, an asteroid base sited among the rings of HIP 17692 A4 in the HIP 17692 system. A Federal spokesperson confirmed the outpost would offer independent pilots a wide range of services.
