Update 2.4 : The imminent Return

The beta 2.4 has launched since August 17th and should be released soon-ish! Get ready for the Return of the Thargoids thanks to our various news and guides available. The Combat guide will be updated this weekend. Not that the Open Beta will close on Monday, 4th of September.

The community is rather salty right now because of the Elite: Dangerous news being clogged, and it seems to drag on. Frontier are constantly justifying themselves on the matter: their strategy with the update 2.4 The Return is very different from what we’ve known since the release, in 2014. It is a first experimentation of this process, bringing both positive and negative notes.

The files are now encrypted in order to prevent data mining, it is a good thing as we won’t be spoiled ever again by dataminers. As this is a « mission 0 spoilers », the beta contains very little content despite interesting changes. We could have had a quick livestream as Frontier had proposed in 2.0. No ship to test despite the expectations of the Type 10 Defender and the Panther Clipper, will they be released in 2.4? No preview, no livestream, nothing that could make us want to play the last Season 2 update, Horizons, so far. I do not worry about it – I am patient and I understand the move – however it is not the case for everyone.

The main content of the Update should arrive fully in our face from day 1 Launch, and then the whole thing would expand over time by adding features, new stories, possibly new ships and drastic changes in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Although the general idea of a gradually unfolding content may please, I think that small clues, previews, Q&A with some developers, videos of 2.4 artworks creations or different animations would have hyped the community without leaving them in an idle state, negatively impacting the general sentiment. The Frontier Expo also adds a double hold of the information, so that the event will get maximum impact. In any case, Frontier Developments should not fail this last Season 2 Update, and the FX17 event should unveil extremely satisfying content for Elite: Dangerous in 2018. I’m sure we’ll be blown away 🙂

What do you think of this new process?

  • The developers continue to read the forums in order to collect feedback from players for the Update 2.4, especially on synthesis that could in the future have only one active effect at the same time or it would take a short time before being active. If the process is interrupted by an attack, it would not work and should be restarted. Discussions are also ongoing regarding the Federation’s Bounties, but nothing very important on this side.
  • Note that the Beta 2.4 forums are still opened and awaiting your feedback: Official Elite: Dangerous Forums.

gamescom 2017

The Remlok Industries team was here at gamescom 2017 from Tuesday 22 of August to Saturday 26!

We’ve been wandering a lot during these days, to test upcoming games, new releases and updates. We had less announcements this year than the previous ones but we really enjoyed ourselves, especially at the Frontier Meet at the 28th floor of a sumptuous building near Koelnmesse.

First of all, some details of our discussion with Ed regarding your feedback. Hush hush stance before the 2.4 release and the Frontier Expo, however these two events should be an explosion of information. The community should be really pleased. Hold on, we’re almost there 😉

Q/A with Edward Lewis

Today is gamescom! We strolled in the Press area while looking for Ed and Bo, here they were, hiding among free drinks in biscuits in the large booth! 😉

They were as usual, really cool and open! Dale reminded us recently that nothing will be unveiled at gamescom, if not friendly discussions and community feedback. They will however Falcon Punch the Frontier Expo, early in October. It will take patience to know more about the future of Elite: Dangerous and its 2018 content. The 2.4 also remains silent, no spoiler (but the Type 10  ).

Here are the main topics of our discussions:

  • Commodities storage and Materials
That’s something they would like to do, but they are currently focused on other topics. They have a lot of feedback from the community and it is a much needed feature, they are aware and will adjust their list of priorities according to the content to be developed.
  • Ships Builds via the Outfitting
?? Like Ed, I’d never heard of it, but it’s still interesting.
  • A feature to transform 10 canisters in 1 bigger canister. Easier to pick up.
Interesting, but it would be difficult to get into the ship’s cargo as it would still be scooped by the small entrance. Maybe in the future, the idea is noted.
  • Guilds? Social?
Very demanded by the community as well, not in the current priorities but good ideas to develop this are in their sheets.
  • CQC enhancements?
The CQC had some concerns with the sale of Arena on Steam, which had the opposite effect expected: the players didn’t play Elite: Dangerous after testing Arena. So they withdrew it from the Steam sales. However, the project is not abandoned. Frontier are still growing and recruiting new talents. Arena could come back in the future with serious developments – for the moment: patience.
  • Powerplay
AH! to be discussed with Sandro, Ed does not have all the details on this subject but a lot of feedback from the players have been gathered and these information are crucial in the (re)development of Powerplay. For the moment, the team is not huge and the priorities are elsewhere, but it remains something they would like to work on.
  • Orrery map, new SRV, new Multicrew roles or SRV Multicrew
Nothing about it, there was a concern about the SRV Multicrew role and a lack of MC gameplay, but that remains under consideration. Who knows, maybe for new SRV in the future?

I hope to see you during the Frontier Expo, this October the 7th in London! #FX17

◘ 19 August – Reports have surfaced that Admiral Aden Tanner, Chief of Federal Security and so-called ‘alien tsar’, is now liaising with Aegis, the inter-superpower initiative established to investigate the Thargoids. News of Admiral Tanner’s involvement has already prompted speculation that the cold war between the Empire and the Federation could be thawing. Contrasting voices have suggested that Tanner’s association could divert Aegis from its scientific agenda and set it on a more militaristic course.

In the wake of this development, Admiral Tanner made the following statement:

“It is my sincere pleasure to support Aegis in its mission and contribute to what I hope will be a new era of collaboration. I know there are those who have questioned my involvement with Aegis, but I can assure you that after forty years in the military, I am ready for some peace. Our current priorities are determining the scale of the Thargoids’ presence in human space and confirming their intentions regarding humanity. We have no concrete information to share with the galactic community at this time, however.”

◘ 21 August – The Kpelidoog Empire Assembly, an Imperial organisation based in the Kpelidoog system, has announced plans to build a new Wells-class Carrier to support astronomical research.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the organisation said:

“Many of the galaxy’s scientific groups are currently focused on the Thargoids, but we think it’s important to keep an eye on the bigger picture. Once complete, this new ship will gather data on stellar bodies and unusual celestial phenomena. The success of this initiative depends largely on the support of the galactic community. That’s why we’ve decided to incorporate the name of the pilot who makes the largest contribution into the name of the new vessel.”

◘ 24 August – The Kamadhenu Chapterhouse of Inquisition has announced plans to establish a series of starports between the core systems and Colonia to make the daunting voyage a little easier. A total of three starports have been planned, which the Chapterhouse hopes will expedite the creation of a freight and passenger service known as the Blue Star Line.

“The growth of Colonia has been astounding, but its continued success depends on developing more substantive infrastructure. Having received the blessing of the Colonia Council, the Chapterhouse of Inquisition intends to realise a vision of trans-galactic commerce that will benefit all of humanity.”

◘ 26 August – Although the first hints of the Thargoid presence began with the discovery of Unknown Artefacts in 3301, the current chapter in the Thargoid story started last year with the discovery of alien shipwrecks in the Pleiades Nebula. A few months later, in January 3303, the first interdiction from a Thargoid ship was reported. In May, accounts surfaced of attacks in the Maia system against Federal vessels. Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen Thargoid ships at the sites, but the Federation refused to comment on the possibility of Thargoid involvement.

A key discovery was made a few weeks later, when massive Thargoid structures were found in a number of systems. Several of these structures were discovered to contain functional Thargoid technology. With events unfolding at such a rapid pace, the superpowers have struggled to formulate appropriate responses. But the creation of Aegis, a joint-superpower initiative designed to coordinate research into the Thargoids, suggests that the galaxy’s leaders are now taking steps to address the situation.

Professor Cora Shaw, director of the Palin Institute, offered the following assessment:

“We are faced with a number of pressing questions. Why have the Thargoids entered human space? Can we communicate with them? Are they hostile? Hopefully Aegis can provide us with some answers.”

Meanwhile, in an article for the Imperial Herald, journalist Kelvin Masters gave a more frank analysis:

“The barnacles seem to indicate that the Thargoids were in Maia and Merope long before we were. For all we know, humanity has expanded into what the Thargoids see as their territory. I have no interest in scaremongering, but my belief is that a Thargoid attack could be imminent – their behaviour certainly seems to suggest they are probing us for weaknesses.”

1st September – Following news that scientists from the Alliance, Empire and Federation have united to form a new research initiative, speculation is mounting that the cold war between the Empire and the Federation could be nearing an end. As the conflict enters its second year, a number of commentators have expressed hope that peace might be in sight. The Imperial Herald’s political correspondent, Daxton Sung, offered the following analysis:

“It’s inevitable that the formation of Aegis would lead to assumptions that the cold war is ending, but unfortunately there’s little evidence to that effect. These are the galaxy’s largest superpowers we’re talking about. The fact that there’s accord among certain sectors doesn’t mean there’s harmony at every level. But what does either side have to gain from maintaining its position? Neither the Empire nor the Federation has demonstrated it can prevent the other from extracting meta-alloys, which is supposedly what this conflict is all about. The only person to have been significantly affected by all this is poor old Professor Palin, who’s still languishing behind a Federal blockade. Frankly, the situation is farcical. I suspect both Arissa Lavigny-Duval and Zachary Hudson know they’re better off calling time on the whole thing, but neither side wants to be seen as ceding to the other. It’s about pride, essentially. Shouldn’t our leaders be above such things?”

Neither Federal nor Imperial sources elected to comment.
